I read a story today that reminded me of the immense power that every person has to positively change the lives of others, or perhaps even save someone’s life. The best part of the story; a simple wave or smile could make all the difference to another person.
I noticed my boyfriend would always wave to everyone while we were driving around. No matter who it was, he’d flash a smile, and wave happily, even if they gave him weird looks and didn’t wave back.
I asked him why he waved to strangers like that, and he said, “I heard about some people who had failed to die by suicide. Many of them said that if a stranger had just acknowledged them with a smile or a wave, they wouldn’t have tried to end their lives. I want to save a life today”
Quote by Leo Buscaglia
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, and honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around”
Thoughts to ponder
Take a moment to think about how many people you might encounter in any average day. Family and friends, work colleagues, clients, acquaintances, customer service and sales people, fellow volunteers, business and networking members, doctors and nurses, complete strangers, and the list goes on and on. All of these people play a part in our lives as well.
I have personally had many complete strangers that have made a huge impact in my day(s), simply by smiling at me. You know, ‘one of those days’ that might be filled with dissapoinment or feeling discouraged, or self doubt and sadness, or sometimes we might be wondering what our purpose in life really is! And then, someone we know or a complete stranger does something that makes us feel special, or appreciated, or wanted and needed. All of which has the potential to turn our day or our life around.
I imagine that every person will encounter ‘those days’ in their lifetime. Even the people that we know; the ones that seem to always be happy, or motivated, or have a great attitude, or the people that we think have ‘horse shoes of luck or success’ tied to their lives.
Each and every day presents us with many opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we know, and even the people we meet and may never see again. Waving or smiling at the strangers we encounter throughout our journey, may or may not change or save their lives. But then again, you just never know…
This I know for certain. I’m going to keep waving and smiling at strangers. I’ll also be hoping that some of the strangers will wave or smile back at me. And the best part; I may never know whether I changed or saved someone’s life, but they will know. And that’s all that really matters.
“I want to save a life today”
And for the rest of my days.
